UK ETA and other travel authorisations: the official price for your passport

Independent site, not a government service: you apply only with the government service of each country, named on every page.

Pick where you are going, your passport and how many of you travel: the checker gives the authorisation you need, its official fee and the only official site.

Calculation method and sources

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) costs £20 per person since April 8, 2026, babies and children included, and it is the only price the Home Office charges: you apply on GOV.UK or in the UK ETA app, usually get a decision within a day (up to three working days), and the ETA then lasts two years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner. US citizens have needed one since January 8, 2025; most Europeans since April 2, 2025. The same logic applies elsewhere, with different prices: CAD 7 for the Canadian eTA (five years, by air only), USD 40.62 for the US ESTA since October 16, 2026, AUD 20 for the Australian ETA app (the eVisitor is free for European passports) and NZD 117 for an NZeTA bought in the app with the tourist levy. The checker above applies these rules to your passport, adds up the whole group and converts the total into euros at the European Central Bank rate of October 23, 2026.

The five travel authorisations at a glance

Five English-speaking countries now ask visitors who do not need a visa to get a digital permission before they board. They share the idea and little else: the fee, the validity, the delay and the way to apply all differ. This table gives the official price per person, read in the text that sets it, with our conversion into euros at the ECB rate of October 23, 2026.

Validity always stops earlier if the passport expires first. The Australian ETA price is the service charge of the official app, the only charge for that visa; the eVisitor is free for European passports. The NZeTA total includes the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy of NZD 100, paid by most visitors at the same time.

Your passport decides, not where you live

Each country publishes a list of nationalities, and the checker reads those lists. For the United Kingdom the ETA came in waves: Qatar and the other Gulf nationalities first, then 43 countries including the United States, Canada and Australia on January 8, 2025, and the European countries on April 2, 2025. In all 83 nationalities need an ETA, while 115 others still need a visitor visa at £135 and cannot use the ETA at all. British and Irish citizens need nothing. A US citizen who lives in Paris needs an ETA for London; a French citizen with a US green card still needs one too, because the rule follows the passport.

Canada works the other way round for Americans: US citizens need no eTA, and US lawful permanent residents of any nationality have been exempt too since 26 April 2022, under section 190 of the Canadian regulations. The ESTA is only for the 42 countries of the US Visa Waiver Program; a Canadian citizen needs neither visa nor ESTA. Australia gives European passports a free eVisitor and asks AUD 20 through its app from the other ETA countries, the United States included. New Zealand exempts Australians and charges the NZeTA plus the levy to 60 visa waiver nationalities.

Everyone pays, children included

The most common surprise is the family bill. None of the five systems has a child rate: a newborn needs an authorisation linked to its own passport and pays the adult fee. A family of four from the United States visiting London pays £80 (≈ €95.55). The same four British travellers flying to Florida pay USD 162.48 for their ESTAs, and a round trip through Vancouver adds CAD 28 for four Canadian eTAs. One adult can fill in the applications for the whole family, but each one is separate and paid separately; the UK ETA app, the NZeTA app and the Australian ETA app all let you add other travellers in the same session.

Group tours, school trips and business teams follow the same arithmetic, which is why the checker asks for the number of travellers and multiplies each fee rather than quoting one person. If your trip crosses several countries, select them all: the total in euros adds up every authorisation you need, and the line for each country tells you where to apply.

What an unofficial site really charges you

GOV.UK warns that other websites may charge more to apply and that you should avoid websites that imitate government services; Canada asks travellers to apply only on its official website. These sites fill in the same form you could fill in yourself and add a service charge that can reach several times the official fee. They do not get you a faster decision: the government processes the application in the same queue. If a site has quoted you a price, type it below and see how much of it is a mark-up.

The address is the test. An official UK form lives on gov.uk; the Canadian eTA on canada.ca; the ESTA on esta.cbp.dhs.gov; Australian visas on homeaffairs.gov.au and in apps published by the Department of Home Affairs; New Zealand on immigration.govt.nz. A copy can look exactly like the official service: read the domain before you type your passport number.

When to apply

Most decisions come in minutes, but each country gives a margin you should respect. GOV.UK says a decision usually arrives within a day and can take up to three working days, and you must not travel before the confirmation email. Canada approves most eTAs within minutes and emails instructions within 72 hours when it needs documents. Immigration New Zealand asks you to allow 72 hours. The United States and Australia give no figure: CBP recommends applying as soon as you start planning, before you buy tickets. The checker shows an “apply by” date for each destination, counted in calendar days so that a weekend never catches you out.

Validity and your passport

The authorisation is tied to the passport you used. It lasts two years for the UK ETA, the ESTA and the NZeTA, five years for the Canadian eTA and twelve months for the Australian ETA and eVisitor, unless the passport expires earlier, in which case it ends with the passport. You can travel as often as you like during that time, within the length of stay each country allows: up to six months per visit for the UK, ninety days for the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, three months per entry for Australia. A new passport, even after a loss, means a new application and a new fee.

Prices change, and we date them

Two of the five fees changed in 2026. The UK ETA went from £16 to £20 on April 8, 2026, under the Home Office fee table of that date. The ESTA went from USD 40.27 to USD 40.62 on October 16, 2026, the fiscal year 2027 inflation adjustment published in the Federal Register on October 1, 2026; if an application is refused, USD 10.62 is kept. Every figure on this site comes from a data file regenerated by a script that reads the official sources, and each page shows the date the fees were read. When a government announces a new fee, the page says so with its date rather than guessing.

And Europe: ETIAS is not open yet

The European Union is preparing its own authorisation, ETIAS, for visa-exempt visitors to the Schengen area and Cyprus. The Commission announced a fee of €20, with nothing to pay under 18 or over 70, and the regulation sets a validity of 3 years. On October 24, 2026 the system was not in operation and no start date had been published, so nobody can apply for an ETIAS today, and a site that takes payment for one now is not selling a real authorisation. Americans, Britons, Canadians and Australians travelling to Paris, Rome or Berlin still need only a valid passport for a short stay, within the 90 days in any 180-day period that already apply. Europeans themselves will never need ETIAS. The ETIAS page follows the official announcements and will show the start date as soon as the Commission fixes it, with the fee for your group. Until then, the authorisations that matter for European travellers are those of the countries they visit: the UK ETA for London or Edinburgh, the ESTA for New York, the eTA for Montreal.

What this site does, and what it does not do

ETA Price is published by Radif Partners. It reads the official texts, applies them to your passport and your group, and sends you to the official site to apply. It is not a government site, not a visa agency and not an intermediary: it files no application, takes no payment and earns no commission. A border officer can still refuse entry to someone holding an authorisation, and a government can change its rules overnight; the official site always has the last word. The method page explains every rule the checker uses, with its source.

Frequently asked questions

Is £20 really all I have to pay for a UK ETA?

Yes. GOV.UK states that it costs £20 to apply online or through the UK ETA app, and that you cannot get a faster decision by applying through another website or app. Any amount above £20 per person is a service charge added by a third party, not a government fee. There is no extra charge for children, for a second entry or for checking your ETA online.

Do American citizens need an ETA to visit London?

Yes, since January 8, 2025, for any visit to England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland of up to six months, including a stopover where you pass through UK border control. One ETA per traveller at £20, valid for two years or until the passport expires. A US green card does not change this: what counts is the passport you travel on.

Does a baby need its own travel authorisation?

For the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, yes: each traveller needs an authorisation linked to their own passport, whatever their age, and pays the same fee as an adult. A family of four going to the UK pays £80, and the same family flying to the United States pays USD 162.48. The checker multiplies it for you.

Why does the checker show prices in euros?

Because most of our readers pay with a card in euros. We convert each official fee at the European Central Bank reference rate of October 23, 2026 and say so; your bank will use its own rate on the day and may add a foreign transaction fee. The amount actually charged by the government is always the one in pounds, Canadian dollars, US dollars, Australian or New Zealand dollars.

How do I recognise the official application site?

Look at the address, not the design. The UK form is on gov.uk, the Canadian eTA on canada.ca, the ESTA on esta.cbp.dhs.gov, the Australian ETA in the Australian ETA app published by the Department of Home Affairs, and the NZeTA on immigration.govt.nz or in the NZeTA app. A site that asks for more than the official fee is not the government.

Can I use one authorisation for several countries?

No. Each country runs its own system and each authorisation only opens the border of the country that issued it. A trip to London, New York and Toronto needs a UK ETA, an ESTA and a Canadian eTA, three applications and three fees. Select several destinations in the checker to see the total for the whole itinerary.

What happens if I renew my passport?

The authorisation is linked to the passport number you applied with. When you get a new passport, the UK ETA, the ESTA, the Canadian eTA, the Australian ETA and the NZeTA do not move across: you apply again with the new passport and pay the fee again, even if the old authorisation had time left on it.
